Thanks to Jaundiced Hack on Tony Kempster's forum I now know that the bird of prey hovering over the fields at Earlswood was a kestrel. Apparently the kestrel is the only British bird of prey that is able to hover.
So there you go, life is an education!

During the second era of non league football at Hereford United, there was always a visit from a sparrowhawk in the second half of winter games. Starlings would roost on the floodlight pylons, not disturbed by the sleeping Conference crowds and the hawk would turn up for dinner.
